I've never been to the pound before. Or maybe I have and just don't remember it. Jason hadn't ever been to the pound either. Well! We had quite the experience.
Let me start off by saying that we DID adopt our puppy!
So we make the half hour drive to the pound in Mesa, walk in, head straight for the animals. Before we push the door open we take half a second to remind ourselves to keep focused and not try to take home the first sad puppy we see. Okay, all done focusing & onwards to the little ones. We go down the first row and see a bunch of older rottweilers. At this point I'm thinking holy WOW. Just huge! I tell Jason I could never adopt an adult rottweiler because we would have NO idea what would set that huge animal off.
We see 2 really cute german shepherd mixes and stare for a long time, so cute! We decide to see what else there is and head down the next room [all cats] and then down the last one where we see a bunch of little rottie mixes! ALSO SO CUTE! We ask the volunteer when they would be able to be adopted since they were still listed as strays. We find out they aren't available for consideration until tomorrow so we go back to the german shepherds. And then back to the rotties. Then back to the german shepherds[are you seeing a trend in how we make our decisions? this was a lot like shopping for a grill, haha]. We finally decide that they would be able to be adopted sooner and since they were bigger they might be closer to being ready for puppy classes.
So we find another volunteer and ask how we can meet one of them and he tells us to go down the hall, wait outside, and they'll bring her out to us. We go out, wait in line, tell them which kennel and which puppy and then they bring her out to us. UGH! The little stinker is so cute. She pees in fear, shakes for a little bit and then she snuggles up. We hung out for like 15 minutes petting the puppy and sitting around and decide we'd like to take her home.
Back in line, wait our turn, walk in the processing area with puppy in Jason's arms. [this other dog kept trying to sit on her and she put her paws up on us like "help he's a jerkface!" so Jason was holding her at this point] Out of absolutely NOWHERE, this crazy/druggie/alcohol/homeless looking crazy man comes walking in fast with this HUGE rabied looking dog while we're in there with just a few volunteers and our little girl. **FREAK OUT**. The animal cop/maybe regular cop? guy is like "Hey what are you doin man you can't just come in here" and the crazy guy is like "You gotta help me with this dog". So I like at Jason like oh man what do we do now? and then the volunteer is like "hey come out this door" So we hurry out and they lock all the doors on that guy. Someone comes out and tags our puppy and tells us just to go upfront and go through the adoption process and they'll take her back to the kennel. [at this point I wonder if that situation happens all the time?]
Go up front, fill out adoption form, find out I smudged the dog's ID number and have to go all the way back to the crazy processing area to get her# again, back up front, pay for dog, find out we can't have her until Monday! Ugh!
So we adopted her, she is scheduled to get spayed and we pick her up monday after 2:30. She is a 2 month old German Shepherd mix and she is SO cute!!
